Cinnamon and Embers and Home
Rose swipes her finger through the icing at the back of the cake, and just like that, the wedding isn’t perfect anymore. No one but Teddy’s even noticed her, and she doesn’t mind that. She pops her finger in her mouth and sucks. Hard.
Mint buttercream. Mint because it’s Victoire’s favorite, buttercream because it makes Dominique feel sick. And it doesn’t matter that Victoire’s still marrying him, Dom’s in trouble for thinking she could even touch Teddy. Much less snog him.
Which is why it’s probably better that Victoire doesn’t know about Rose and Teddy and that time behind the stairs or against the outside of the Burrow or (Merlin help them) on Louis’s bed. Because Rose doesn’t quite know what to think about those except that she didn’t start all of them and when she remembers, she gets warm all over.
Across the room, Dom’s slipped over to Teddy. Her hand’s on his arm and his hair is a kind of murky brownish-pink, not sure whether it wants to be the brown Victoire prefers or pink. Rose.
That’s the thought that makes her drift towards them, when Dominique puts her hand on Teddy’s arm and murmurs something and he follows her off. Rose knows eavesdropping is immoral, but where Teddy’s concerned, she’s found she doesn’t really care. Instead, she lurks outside the half-open door, watching Dom’s fingers against Teddy’s jacket and listening to the hushed voices.
“Why are you doing this?”
Even her voice, full of let-down and stolen kisses with no apparent meaning, is lovely. Rose tugs at a strand of her hair.
“I have to.” Teddy’s worn-down, missing something. Probably himself. “I almost lost them when she found us the first time. They’re my family too, Dom, and if this is what it takes…”
“They can’t disown you if you’re with me!” she cries. Realizing she’s too loud, Dom hushes, leaning in towards Teddy. “Teddy, please…” Her mouth’s so close to his and she’s so Dom and so perfect. “Even Vic doesn’t really want this, just something perfect.”
They’re so close and Rose holds her breath, but Teddy pushes Dom away. “I can’t, Dom. This… isn’t right.”
She may be blond and perfect but Rose can still see Dom’s hurt as she slips away. The redhead falls into the room in the absence. Teddy’s hair’s gray now, gray like a storm.
“Teddy…” she murmurs, and he enfolds her in his arms.
“I know, Rose, but…”
“I can be patient.”
Teddy’s mouth doesn’t taste like mint or buttercream, but like cinnamon and embers and home, and Rose loses herself in it because it’s not Victoire’s favorite or what makes Dom sick, it’s her oasis. So she almost misses when he murmurs to her.
“I won’t make you wait too long.”

She was nine years old and Molly had been crying at night and she wanted to prove she could do things on her own because somewhere in her she was afraid she might lose them all if she couldn’t hold on to all of them. Her neon shoes dangled from her fingers, laces trailing on the ground and sand was getting all over them because even the Minister of Magic takes a vacation every so often. The beach was cold that day with a storm-green wind.
Swimming fearlessly like Lily does now, only Lucy’s shoes were left on the sand, lonely on their sides. Their laces waved in the wind and green-blue-gray saltwater poured into Lucy’s lungs. Audrey cracked one of Lucy’s ribs resuscitating her but the shoes were lost forever, bright-green laces buried in the sand.

Lucy was fourteen the only time she ran away. Some days her chest still hurt and they said it always would. She was alone in the house now, despite her parents’ presence. Molly had left right after school ended; got off the train at King’s Cross where her boyfriend kissed her like she was the only person who had ever existed. They were swimming with sharks somewhere far away and Lucy pretended she’d never gotten the unmarked postcard.
She ended up at her Uncle Harry’s house and they’d welcomed her in. Lily had just taught her owl to do a flip, didn’t Lucy want to see? Artemis spun around the youngest Potter’s arm even though she clearly hated the trick itself and everyone hugged Lily and laughed and invited Lucy to stay but she went home right after dinner. Percy hadn’t even noticed she was gone.

When Lucy graduated from Hogwarts, Lily was the first one to give her a blazing hug, all alight with fire she’d inherited from her mother. She was seventeen and fearless and Lucy was eighteen and wanted to cry. She tried to hug Lily back but the younger girl was crushing her arms and pressed a bag of Galleons into her palm and told her to have fun. After everyone congratulated Lucy, Lily ran to her family and her oldest brother still picked her up even though she was way too big for it.
Lucy “had fun” throwing the Galleons into a lake, one by one. She clenched her broom between her knees and gritted her teeth and gave herself a point for every time she hit someone swimming below. Two for a hand or a foot.

Lily’s nineteen and long-legs and gorgeous. Her rich red hair sets her on fire and maybe no one else notices as she leaps into the water with a shout, but Lucy can see Teddy Lupin’s blue-green gaze following her lithe form. He’s twenty-nine and Victoire’s and despite that Lucy knows Lily’s going to get him without even trying.
Lily goes swimming whenever she wants and Lucy hates her for it.
There were times when Toire would put streaks of color in her hair just for Ted.
